Island Living

Total Black: $155.55
Total Red: $251,982.09

Today’s post almost wasn’t.  Electricity on island is a bit touch-and-go at times and today was one time when it went.  And took a while to come back.  With electricity out, the internet modem goes out as well.  Clearly it’s back on if I’m posting, but I’ll be brief in case it cuts out again.  Aside: it is dark here without lights.  I forgot how beautiful and vivid the night sky is.  But it’s also spooky when the rustle of a palm tree makes you think some animal . . . or person . . . may be around the corner.  To date on island I’ve seen bats, iguanas, deer—opened my door one morning to a startled buck chomping on the shrubs—storks, geckos, a huge strange beetle, and a few mongooses.  Or would that be mongeese?

Oh . . . and who can forget the dreaded centipede.  After spending all day cleaning, back in Freedom From or Freedom To, I sit down to write that day’s post, and out crawls this nasty creature from underneath my bed.  I killed it immediately.  I’m told it has a nasty bite.  The cats had just been under the bed with it.  I’m not sure how it got in or where it cames from.  But I certainly cannot afford doctor or veterinarian bills right now.

And then a few hours later, its harmless cousin—a millipede, what Cruzans refer to as a Gongolo—paid a visit me a visit as well.  I guess cleanliness is attractive to all God’s creatures.  But for sure one thing I do not like about living here is all the things that can get you.  Not sure why that is, but the warmer the climate the more harmful critters.  Very few nasty bugs or crazy creatures in Siberia, for example.

But that’s a long digression from what was supposed to be a quick post.  Perhaps I should take some pictures of all the flora and fauna of St. Croix.

Total black is down due to normal day-to-day costs.  Total red is down because the payment, mentioned in Sigh of Relief, paying off the Saks Fifth Avenue credit card posted.  I still need to add in the balance due on the car.  I mentioned in And Done that I can’t add the auto loan lender into the Bank of America syncing software to get up-to-date balances each day.  So I guess for now I’ll just add in the total amount remaining and then reconcile that amount periodically.  Perhaps as I make the payments each month I can request the current balance and update accordingly.  For now I’ll just wait until the 10th, for my next day of accounting, to add it in to total red.

  1. I would have died if either one of those things crawled out from under my bed. But the mongooses would have been cool to see.

  2. I think so too. I didn’t get to see those mongeese up close. 😉
